On this occasion, I thought I could manage the two trolleys outside the creationist's accommodation block in East Street.
Blackberries coming on in the passage between the foot bridge over the railway at the bottom of Ewell's West Street and the gas depot. Not a patch I have ever picked.
But a bit further on it looks as if it would certainly repay a visit in due course.
For some reason, the wide grass banks outside Tchibo Coffee of Blenheim Road carry a good range of flowers, including what turned out to be a pyramid orchid noticed at reference 3. A flower which we subsequently discovered to be common on the down land behind Brading on the Isle of Wight.
Just the one small one on this occasion. Maybe some more will come up before the grass cutters get in there.
PS: following the post at reference 4 and thinking to learn more about the incidence of depression around the world, I got hold of a copy of the 25 year old report at reference 5, the result of a two-year collaborative effort by members of Department of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. An accessible paper back with around 300 pages of text. For some reason, I started with the chapter on women and was shocked to read of the poor position of many - not to say most - women across large swathes of the globe. With to a depressingly large extent, men getting out and doing their thing, leaving their women, for example, the job of walking miles and miles, back and forth, to the nearest water to fetch the family supply. And all too apt to be bashed about when their men got home, having drunk most of their money. One pointer was the tendency of outside agencies to focus on maternity and child health, that is to say on reproductive success, rather than on the health and happiness of the women themselves. I wonder how much things have got better since 1996.
