The NYRB drew my attention to an amusing bit of art this morning, to be found at reference 1: 'DataPools is a Wi-Fi geolocation spoofing project that virtually relocates your phone to the latitudes and longitudes of Silicon Valley's elite'. It seems that the spoofers - Adam Harvey and Anastasia Kubrak - never before heard of - have built some stuff which enables your telephone to spoof having visited the swimming pools of some very rich people in California.
I assume that this means that when Google and Apple and people like that poke around in your phone to see what you have been up to, they see that you have been visiting the Masters of the Universe, and start sending you advertisements and other materials appropriate to visitors to the said Masters. Who knows, maybe your credit rating gets a hike. Maybe all your blogposts move a few rungs up other peoples' search results. Maybe a lot of rungs. Maybe it can fake up pictures of you lolling around the pools in question in a suitable state of undress. Maybe even, I will get around to reading what exactly this spoofing does achieve - but it is a nice idea anyway.
Some connection with some Berlin art operation, to be found at reference 2.
