A festal fake, taken from one of the elaborately dressed rooms at Polesden Lacey. In this case, I think the dining room. A fake, flickering candle, standing in for the whole elaborate performance that is now Christmas at Polesden Lacey. Entertaining enough in its way, but one wonders what Christmas was really like, under the supervision of the social mountaineer who wound up giving the house that (Glasgow) beer built to the nation.
In those days before televised entertainment and in the absence of quite so many commercial trimmings, did the house guests really go in for an elaborate Christmas? Or was it just another well-oiled day in the country?
PS: the Samsung telephone does something to allow for the poor light. Something which includes an instruction to hold very still while it does its business. With what I thought was quite a good result.
