I mentioned the government looking ridiculous in a footnote to reference 1, that is to say the business of evacuating cats and dogs from Afghanistan. Then this morning the FT points me at reference 2, where it seems that bringing back Imperial measures, at least in some part, is on our government's to do list. One more silly story with which to needle hard working diplomats from our Foreign Office when they are at sherry parties in foreign parts.
PS: and I was amused to read that the new supervisor of our media and culture, a working class girl from Liverpool, once called Osborne and Cameron 'two arrogant posh boys'. She who is now a faithful lieutenant to another arrogant posh boy. And who is very right wing. A proper standard bearer for what has become the blue wall of the north. And who may have known the Panorama Hotel, of Halton, near Runcorn, in which I put time during my time with the Department of Employment. Or perhaps later with the CCTA, then a branch of the Treasury. A site which Bing tells me has been sold just this year: 'an irregularly shaped parcel of land comprising the site of the former Panorama Hotel and extending to approximately 0.23 Hectares (0.57 Acres). The site previously benefited from planning consent for the construction of 13 apartments together with associated car parking and landscaping works'. The guide price was a little under £200,000. So levelling up has got a way to go yet.
