Brick walking, last noticed towards the end of reference 1, does gradually wear the bricks down and one (of the sixteen) has already had to be replaced, having crumbled during a bit of careless handling. So I was happy to gather up this brick this morning from the grass on the top of West Hill. At least, fairly happy, knowing from experience that such things can seem quite heavy after a mile or so when one does not have a bag or even a short piece of rope.
And so it proved to be, even on the abbreviated circuit of through town and down Hook Road. To the point where, by the end, I was stopping every few hundred yards to give the hands a rest. Weighing in, I was surprised to find that it weighed 5lbs 3oz, a lot more than I had expected for something that had seemed to weigh nothing at all when I first picked it up. Furthermore, it was slightly narrower than the other bricks that I compared it with, maybe by as much as an eighth of an inch. And it had a new-to-me pattern of frog, with a bar down the middle. But no maker's name, so I can't hold them to account.
BH pointed out that the brick may have been doing service weighing down the lid of someone's food waste bin, out for collection today. A possibility, but I am fairly sure that there were no bins anywhere near the point of recovery.
Two other points.
The gas works continue to close Meadway above where it joins the Stamford Green Pond end of Manor Green Road. See reference 2.
The work to redevelop the half finished garages near the Epsom end of Hook Road, No.65, there or thereabouts, appears to have been paused, with plastic on the roof and the site having been tidied up. Maybe there is some outstanding business with the council, although a quick look did not turn up anything in the planning system. Maybe the money has run out. See reference 3.

Booking probably needed, even for lunch - which last is only Friday and Saturday. And they can afford to be shut on Sunday. Or maybe it's rather that they can't get the staff...
