Three bits of news

First, I read from the opening paragraphs of reference 1 that students at Stirling University are set to ban meat and dairy products from the three Student Union eateries. Apart from frothing about the need to support cattle in Scotland, the authors point out that replacing polluting meat with avocado pears air freighted from South America is not making much net progress on the pollution front. Perhaps someone needs to tell the students that they need to subsist on stuff that grows closer to home, stuff like porridge, greens and kelp. Maybe even some oatmeal cookies, sweetened with sugar made from local sugar beet.

Nevertheless, I hold to the view that it would be a good thing if we got the consumption of meat and dairy down.

Second, I read at reference 2 of a S300 missile made in Russia in the 1970's landing in Poland. It struck me as a bit odd that such an elderly missile could still fly, so I turn up reference 3 where I learn that the very large and successful S300 family of surface to air missiles has indeed been around since the mid 1970's and is deployed by a number of countries within what was the Soviet sphere of influence, including the Ukraine. Including a Chinese version.

It seems that thousands of these systems are deployed in Russia, involving tens of thousands of missiles. Which I suppose, without knowing or attempting to check, is hugely more than we deploy here to defend, for example, London. But, the blitz notwithstanding, I suppose they have rather more excuse to be paranoid about such things than we do.

Third, I am reminded by the people at reference 5 that time is running out for the deep fried Xmas turkeys advertised at the end of reference 5. 'Time is running out, we will sell out.  Order the Best Deep Fried Turkeys in town today.  We have you covered with our side packages, honey glazed hams and all the homemade desserts. Order yours today'. But note that you have to do your own fruit and harvest festival if you want the make up the scene snapped above.

PS: it took brute force to turn up reference 4, my not having thought to include any proper search keys there. 'Lone Star State' far too obscure. Hence the additions to reference 5.
