We must be gluttons for punishment. Not content with doing battle with our new so-called smart television, we decided on Sunday to crack on with a smart telephone. Built in China according to a special recipe specially formulated in Switzerland for the older telephonist. BT, despite their commanding position in the market, do not seem particularly interested in selling such things. So we now have war on two fronts.
The new telephone arrived at the delivery depot in Weybridge a few hours after placing the order with Amazon, at around 02:00 Monday morning, and arrived with us here in Epsom at around 19:00 later that day.
Needless to say, the diagram in the User Guide that came with it did not quite describe the contents of the box, some of which remain a mystery. Nevertheless, the new telephone has now made one call and received several. So far, so good.
In the course of this, we have made two discoveries.
First, I find that we already had one old telephone from BT carefully stored away in its box in the study. A yellow telephone which I cannot remember ever having used. No doubt one day it will find its way to the tip.
Second, in the margins, I found out that Amazon keep your order records for a long time. They were able without any fuss at all to tell me about a book I had bought from them back in 2003. Just had to mention the name of the author and up it all came.
PS: some of these telephones come with a wrist alarm which you can use to summon telephonic help when you fall over in the garden. But we decided that we were not quite ready for that particular refinement.
