Woke in the middle of the night to a dream about which I can now remember little. But it did involve a series of frauds or thefts of a white collar variety, vaguely located in the Aldwych, a place I was a student in and a place where I subsequently worked for a few years, fifty years ago now. White collar in the sense what while lots of money was involved, there was no damage to property or persons, or even threats to persons. I seemed to be part of a small gang, all suited up in what was then the uniform of office workers.
But I do remember that, in the dream, I remembered having had the dream before and that I vaguely knew what was going to happen next. Which did happen next, so probably not quite awake. All very strange.
When I was fully awake, I moved onto the important question of whether a lunch time concert tomorrow at the Wigmore Hall would be a good plan, a Beethoven string quartet concert which their website tells me is sold out.
We are both triple jabbed and as far as we know we have not been infected or ill; there have been none of the recognised symptoms. We probably won't have any if we go, but are we contributing to spreading by (bad) example or otherwise? Would we do better to stay at home?
The train would probably be fairly quiet. The tube would probably be fairly busy. Oxford Circus probably fairly quiet as the shops would not by then be open. All Bar One probably quiet enough. But the hall itself would be crowded and there would be jostling. Masking, while getting better, some way from universal, despite encouragement and reminders from the hall. A lot of relatively vulnerable older people. Getting home again much the same story as getting in.
So I fire up the laptop and ask Bing for guidance. Where lots of stuff comes up but I fail to find anything relevant. The guidance on social distancing looked promising, but all you find on clicking is lots of documents which have been withdrawn. So our government, apart from continuing to shoot itself in the feet from time to time, does not seem to have got the Internet propaganda act together at all. Despite, no doubt, having hired hundreds of highly paid consultants to help them.
Which leaves us drifting towards a no-go decision. But it would all be so much simpler if there was clear guidance. We could then just stick to the guidance and not have to think about it for ourselves. Provision of which might be thought to be a proper part of, a proper duty of government.
