Following reference 1, some Scarlett trivia culled from a Tate library in south London.
According to reference 2, there were some Scarletts based on lands in Essex they got from the Conqueror. Still a bit of a way to Surrey though. Furthermore, there is an early mention of the name - Will Scarlett - in the early version of the Robin Hood story described at reference 3. Otherwise an often Scottish name, originally an occupational name for those involved in the red dye trade.
The pub is a grade 2 listed building, as per reference 4.
While according to the beer people, CAMRA, at reference 5, it became a pub in 1907, which is consistent with the story told by the maps at reference 1. All we need to know now is where CAMRA got their information from.
The snap above is a painting of the charge of Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava, led by one of our Scarlett's sons, not to be confused with the Light Brigade.
