Academic affairs

Sometimes take a curious turn, in this case in Indiana, in the USA. One wonders whether things ever reach such a pass, here in the old country? Perhaps with the truss at the helm for a few months, they will.

From what I can make of it at reference 1, brought to me by an email from the people at reference 2, a rather tangled tale. But, it seems to me, rather an incomplete one. At least I am not able to join up the dots and do not feel that I have got the full picture. Perhaps one needs to be a black academic under pressure to understand.

But whatever the case, the tone of this letter of dismissal is very odd. Perhaps the personnel people over there have to try and cover all kinds of bases, in an effort to head off litigation. There also seems to be an impressive amount of bureaucracy, with lots of people with fancy sounding job titles. Which last is a bit like the semi-privatised school sector has become over here.

PS: it took me a fair amount of fiddling around to convert the pdf file containing the letter into the image above, probably not very satisfactory even now. Microsoft refuses to recognise such files as pictures in applications like Powerpoint and Paint, even when they are just on the one page. It also took a fair amount of fiddling around to work out (once again) how to provide a pointer to a copy of the original file, now at reference 3. For the truly curious.
