Having given the matter of the fox hole reported at reference 1 some thought, I decided that a three pronged approach was needed: sieving frame first, weigh down one end with a cast iron drain cover (BS standard, but badly cracked), weigh down the other end with the tyre acquired in the margins of the outing noticed at reference 2, and used for entertainment purposes from time to time thereafter. Use the pole noticed at reference 3 to anchor the top left hand corner.
And a couple of old clothes hangers were pressed into service to provide the right hand tie. Rather cheap hangers, with the white plastic coating starting to come off the wire under. No idea where they came from, but hung up in the garage along with my bits and pieces of wire in case they come in handy. Which on this occasion they did. All a bit messy, but all the more to annoy and deter a fox: I don't think they like bumping into wire at night.
So far, so good. No signs of vulpine activity overnight Tuesday-Wednesday. And they hadn't elected to try at some other part of the heap, which I had been afraid they might.
