At reference 1, I pondered about why one might buy a big house. Today the FT brings me a house which is both big and expensive, a six bedroom town house in Eaton Square - quite near the Elizabeth Street where I once had a bed-sit - just sold to a New Yorker for whom New York may have lost its charm - for a modest £21m. A touch less than the asking price.
We are told that the ground floor and basement are rather dark. But there are lots of original features from first part of the nineteenth century. And there used to be some very decent public houses in the immediate area. I don't think many of them have retained quite the cachet or clientele they had in my day, but one might check out the Antelope of reference 4. A place where I once inhaled smoke from more than one country.
I shall spend at least part of this evening, having taken something that warms, pondering about how the thoughts of reference 1 might play here.
