Just about this time last year, I made a nil return for Wellingtonia on the Isle of Wight, but claiming one near the south western entrance to the Hindhead tunnel. This year the return will be of the order of four sightings, with the possibility of more to come in the years to come.
However, on return yesterday we got another good sighting of Wellingtonia 35, looming up loud and clear as we approached the entrance to the tunnel. My memory this morning that it was above the road, on the embankment rising above the south bound exit.
Checking this morning, I find that it is much further away from the tunnels than that, in fact more than two bridges away and not on an embankment at all, at most on a slight rise beyond the fence. Although, to be fair, I can see, rather further to the south west than the snap above, that one might think embankment.
Furthermore, at the entrance to the tunnels, there is no embankment. The hill into which the tunnels were bored rises up to the north east, not to the south east.
Maybe policemen are trained to be more careful in these matters. In any event, I can see why they are encouraged to make notes about what they see as soon as possible after the event.
For future reference, I think the tree is in the grounds of a place called 'The Cedars' in High Pitfold. Not presently visible on the ground, in Street View, but possibly to be found at 51.103115789940624, -0.7479175681350562. Plus, there is the identifier on the duplicated street furniture. A failure to cleanly join up two segments of film?
