Corks

A few days ago, I noticed a potato peeler, at reference 1.

It so happens that BH subsequently had a cork problem, arising from a bottle of Prosecco which she has been dipping into. The problem being that the bottle in question has a champagne style cork which you cannot get back into the bottle, at least not without special equipment, and this meant that BH was reduced to sealing the unfinished bottle with the wire thing which was wrapped around the cork in life, as it were. Which did, but which one might think was not going to hold any fizz in for long.

Next up, yesterday, we were able to bring home one of those non-cork corks from the café in which we had taken a crab lunch, of which more in due course. Some sort of cork coloured composite, quite possibly plastic rather than organic. Quite possibly a mixture of cork dust and some kind of resin.

Arrived back at our cottage, I found that, mindful of the peeler problem, we had brought along our own speed peeler. Not quite the real thing of my childhood but near enough. And rather to my surprise, I found that it was sharp enough to take peelings off the composite cork, taking one end down to the point where it could be inserted in the neck of the offending bottle.

So hopefully the fizz will now stay in the bottle for however long, perhaps a week or so, that it will take BH to finish off the contents.
