More lentils

Not many days after the two rounds of lentil soup reported at reference 1, another go. Pretty much the same as last time, but with slightly more lentils (8oz) and slightly more water to start, with more added later. And still more added for the second round, heated in the saucepan rather than the microwave.

Furthermore, for once in a while, I rinsed the lentils before the off, with the discarded water being surprisingly white. Advised so to do by the books, but I don't know that I noticed the difference in the result.

Snapped above about half way through my first helping of round one.

With damsons to follow, stewed with apple to follow both the precedent of blackberry & apple and the pie at reference 2. Cutting with apple both reduces the intensity of the flavour and varies the texture. An altogether lighter dessert than neat stewed damsons.

For round two, the remains of the stew and the left over vegetables were combined to make a soup. Plus a stump of saucisson which missed out on round one.

In the bowl.

Good things lentils, which is slightly odd as I do not think they figured in my childhood diet at all, despite a lot of them being grown in Ontario, not so far from Montreal where my mother was mostly brought up. In fact, as far as I can remember, she was not much into stews or soups at all - other than tinned soups, being particularly partial to Campbell's chicken noodle. On which front we have defected to Knorr dried, which we usually cut with plenty of fresh vegetables. One can only take so much monosodium glutamate at a sitting.

But they did figure in my student days when, for some reason, we consumed a lot of dried pulses, which some of us liked more than others. I suppose they were cheap and nourishing.

PS: we have been pleased with how our bamboo is turning out, now well into its second year with us. The two (kitchen) mint plants - one for him and one for her - planted next to it have, however, expired. Perhaps as vigorous plants they needed the sun, not available at this spot.
