For some reason, this advertisement, which arrived in my inbox this morning, reminds of the stories which used to go the rounds when I was young, stories of sales for dog food matching the seasonal influx of visitors to the seaside towns of the west country.
The days when there were still lots of seaside boarding houses in places like Swanage and Weston-super-Mare offering beds, breakfasts and evening meals, and which expected you and your family to be out for the rest of the day, irrespective of the weather. And when the evening meals featured lots of home made meat pies. All this before self-catering really got underway, although that was available for the industrious, for people like my mother.
Some of the stories explained that the better class of dog food included a message on the bottom of the tin to the effect that the contents were indeed fit for human consumption. Some even went onto to suggest that dog food was probably more nutritious than what might otherwise get served up as fresh, lean meat by your local butcher.
PS: my only quibble with the advertisement snapped above is that the dog appears to be foreign, French to be precise. They are not selling us meat from the European Union, maybe even meat from more than one country? Some of which have a very poor record when it comes to the treatment of our four legged friends.
