Our consumption of honey rises rapidly when we are on the honey and lemon, as we are just presently. So BH was pleased to discover a 340g jar of honey going for 75p at Sainsbury's. Very nearly 12oz in old money. Branded 'Hubbard's Foodstore' and said to be a blend of Brexit honeys, that is to say honeys from outside the European Union. My first thought was Turkey, the place where they seem to grow most of our figs.
A few clicks on the laptop, and I find that 'Hubbard's Foodstore' is this week's name for the Sainsbury's basics range. It seems that Sainsbury's, along with its competitors, have decided that we prefer some euphemism to something as crude as 'bottom of the range', 'basic' or 'economy'.
A few more clicks, and I find that honey prices vary a good deal, ranging from £1 to more than £25 for a jar. The prices for honey from Rowse of reference 1 seem to be particularly wide ranging.
But I am confident that Hubbard's will be fine for the purposes of honey and lemon. Indeed, I was reduced to golden syrup and lemon the other day, without any ill effects. Not so sure about treacle though.
