Piano 86

A rather grander piano than the last one, that is to say a full-on Steinway concert grand. Found at the back of Saint Bartholomew the Great, just by what is left of Smithfield Market. A place first visited back in 2012 and noticed at reference 2, but I have visited it at least a couple of times since then.

A young lady explained to us that as far was she was concerned, the piano, which was part of a musical tie up with the Royal Holloway College, was rather a nuisance as it was so heavy that the castors damaged things, particularly the cast iron gratings over pipes and the tiles, when it was wheeled up to the altar end for concerts. She was in negotiation about some kind of trolley (or perhaps trolleys) to spread their weight a bit.

She also told us that they got Steinway to come and tune the piano every time it was so moved - unless they judged that the performer involved would not know the difference, which, it seems, was sometimes the case.

PS: search has reminded me of a connection between this church and the Chandos Chapel in north London, noticed at reference 3.
