Green berries

That is to say a cluster of immature cob nuts found on a road near Holne, in Devon, left in the snap above. I failed to spot the tree from which these ones had come and failed to find any more otherwise.

Opened with a kitchen gadget which I believe is intended for crushing garlic, with the result right in the snap above. Being rather small, care was needed to separate the bits of broken shell from the bits of broken nut. Being rather unripe, a little sharp, but nutty all the same. Probably not a good idea to eat too many of them at once - so maybe a good thing that they only amounted to something like a level dessert spoon full, rather less than might appear above.

Our first and probably our only cob nuts of the season. Haven't noticed them in Borough Market, although I dare say they were or are to be had. Plus a vague idea that Neal's Yard Dairy have them from time to time.

In fact, the first hedgerow nuts we have had for a while, with the most recent I can turn up being those at reference 2. And, as I recall, they did not turn out very well at all. Much more active back in 2011, as can be seen at reference 1.
