TB, last noticed at reference 1, was in the paper yesterday, albeit only a free, local paper.
The last I heard, and I have not actually visited the house for some weeks, not to say months, was that it was open evenings every day and afternoons Thursday through Sunday. And while the weather held, there was usually a sprinkling of customers outside if I passed late afternoon on an afternoon day.
I noticed this notice, in very small print, over the breakfast cheese and brown. At first it appeared that TB was moving to a much fuller week, 09:00-00:00 Sunday to Thursday, with extension until 01:00 Friday and Saturday. Alcohol not available for the last hour - the traditional drinking up time, once ten minutes rather than 60 minutes on offer now. It then goes on to say that closing times are not changing. All very confusing: perhaps this solicitor speak is just for form, without any intention to in form.
I dare say nearby houses may not be too pleased if late night trade does indeed build up - which would not much affect us, just the odd rowdy group passing by on their way home. We're much more concerned about the people prowling about at the dead of night, when decent folk are asleep, trying to remove our cars.
I also noticed that the Greene King name for this house is the 'Blenheim Arms', a solecism which crept in some years ago and which greatly offending those customers - maybe half the total - who betted on horses. Like many houses in Epsom, this one is named for a famous race horse, nothing to do with coats of arms or any other sort of arm. A solecism compounded by a pub sign showing a horse jumping over a fence - this despite Epsom being a once important flat racing venue which never sank to over the sticks.
Perhaps I need to pay a visit to get the full story. In the meantime, further background is to be found at references 2 and 3.
PS: another item from the free press was a report that Ms. Braverman wants to ban overnight tents from the streets of our cities. Which is all very well, but where are these people going to go in the absence of decently funded social services to scoop them up?
