Trolley 870

The first circuit of the day did not result in any trolleys, but I was able to confirm that the vigorous plant last noticed at reference 2 was indeed a hollyhock, with the flowers popping out of the buds in no time at all. Pleased that it has survived this long.

Home to rejuvenate the second half of the pork soup noticed at reference 1 with more pork and some mushrooms. Given that there was already some pork in the soup and that this piece was probably slightly bigger than the first, the density of pork went up, some consolation for the rest of the soup being past its best. Cooked in a little water and added cooked to the soup, along with its liquor.

On the plate, where it did pretty well. A modest amount left over.

A short break, then out on the second circuit. To find that the drain underneath the fine new drain cover on West Hill, lat noticed at reference 3, was now flooded, presumably blocked, with the water flowing on over it down the hill.

No trolleys in the vicinity of the railway station, so I thought I would try the car park behind the town hall for a change. Where, indeed, I was able to capture a medium small trolley from the M&S food hall. Not altogether sporting, this going so far out of my way to chase down a trolley, but permitted under the rules. For now, at least.

And down the stairs, a collection, one from each of our big stores. No idea what they were doing there or how they got there, but I do not propose to try to get them out. Apart from anything else, I would think that down the stairs counts as private land.

Passed Oxfam on the way back, where they were offering a version of Vermeer's 'View of Delft' for around £40. It looked a bit faded, but thinking about it now, it might well be the very same edition of the painting that we have hanging in our bedroom, one of my parents' wedding gifts, around eighty years ago now. Rather more sensible frame than this one. Most recently noticed in these pages at reference 4.

I have a reason to visit Oxfam tomorrow, so if it is still there, I might take a look at the back for a clue as to its date.

Home via Meadway, to take in the absence of caravan in the front garden of what I think used to be called 'The White House', under renovation for perhaps six months now, with people - including children - living in the caravan for the duration. Perhaps with use of some of the house, some of the time. The things people have to do to make a crust.

The following day, I really did draw a blank. But it being a Wednesday, I was able to finish off the pork soup, OK, if a little tired.

A day also marked by my loading up WhatsApp, as previously noticed at reference 5. In which connection I might say that the WhatsApp conversation with Thames Water worked. One was able to exchange messages at irregular intervals, the conversation survived various changes of operator at their end - and we got there in the end.

One could have just as well done the same thing by email, but if WhatsApp is what floats their boat, so be it. Even if it does now clutter up both my laptop and my telephone. People might even send me messages, or whatever it is that one does on WhatsApp. Perhaps I ought to ask Wikipedia.

Which left enough time for another snap of the Screwfix whitebeam, under a rather threatening sky.

On the way, I was impressed by the speed with which the new steel frame is going up in what used to be the Majestic car park in East Street. Where I noticed that the steel columns were being dropped into place with most of their fixing furniture already drilled and bolted on. So presumably something a bit more sophisticated is involved than dropping the columns into holes and then back filling with a bit of cheap concrete.

The redevelopment at the top of Kiln Lane is also well underway, with lots of bricks being laid behind the hoarding. I think by the people at reference 6. The redevelopment noticed at reference 7.

The day after was a blank too. Where had all the trolleys gone? Was the town being cleaned up ready for the Derby Festival?
