Useful weight

A useful half kilo weight from York, picked up on a short circuit around the block. Now doing service as a weight to hold a book open in the study when I am trying to read two at once. Or something of that sort.

Weighed in at 525g on our kitchen scales, so perhaps a weight training weight rather than a measuring weight, properly certified by the weights and measures people.

A few key strokes and Bing confirms that this is indeed the case, offering lots of images and reference 1. Probably once part of a 20kg dumbbell set, something I do not think I have ever used. Bricks, hot or cold, were more my thing, six or seven of them to the stretch. Eight for showing off. It sticks in my mind that they were sometimes delivered hot from the oven, but maybe that was bags of cement. Delivered on flat bed wagons, well before the invention of pallets and shrink wrap. Long time ago now
